FIXED FIRE PUMP SYSTEMS

DESIGN & INSTALLATION OF FIRE SERVICES FIXED FIRE PUMP SYSTEMS FOR RESIDENTIAL, COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL FACILITIES

A fixed fire pumpset system is a critical component of fire protection infrastructure within buildings, industrial facilities, and other structures. It is designed to provide a reliable source of pressurised water for firefighting purposes, particularly when the available town mains supply is insufficient or unreliable.

PRIMARY COMPONENTS OF A FIXED FIRE SERVICES PUMPSET SYSTEM

Fire Pump: The heart of the system, typically powered by an electric motor or a diesel engine. It is responsible for drawing water from a water source, such as a local authority water main,  dedicated fire water tank or a natural body of water, and pressurising it to the required level for distribution through the fire protection system.

Controller: Monitors the system's operation, automatically starting the pump as needed in response to changes in system pressure or on-demand.

Water Supply: A dedicated water source, which could include an underground fire water tank, an above-ground reservoir, or a connection to the town mains. The system may also include features such as suction piping, valves, and strainers to ensure proper water intake.

Piping Network: Distributes pressurised water throughout the building or facility, typically consisting of a combination of below ground and above ground pipes, as well as branch lines and sprinkler heads.

Auxiliary Equipment: This may include items such as pressure gauges, valves, flow meters, alarms, and backflow preventers to ensure the proper functioning and safety of the system.

OPERATION OF A FIXED FIRE SERVICES PUMPSET SYSTEM

The fire pump system operates in either an automatic or manual mode. In automatic mode, the controller senses a drop in water pressure within the system (typically due to the activation of sprinklers) and automatically starts the pump to maintain adequate pressure. In manual mode, the pump is started manually by an operator.

Once activated, the fire pump draws water from the water supply through suction piping, which is then pressurised and pumped into the piping network.

The pressurised water is distributed through the piping network to the various fire protection devices, such as sprinkler heads, hydrant standpipes, or hose reels, where it is discharged to suppress or control the fire.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FOR A FIXED FIRE SERVICES PUMPSET SYSTEM

Fixed fire pumpset systems are designed in accordance with the NCC/BCA and relevant Australian Standards, which outline requirements for system design, installation, and maintenance.

Factors such as building size, occupancy type, hazard classification, and water supply availability are considered during the design process to ensure the system is adequately sized and configured to meet the specific fire protection needs of the facility.

The system is typically designed with redundancy and reliability in mind, with features such as multiple pumps and backup power sources (e.g., generators) to ensure continued operation in the event of power outages or equipment failures.

MAINTENANCE AND TESTING OF FIXED FIRE SERVICES PUMPSET SYSTEMS

Regular maintenance and testing are essential to ensure the reliability and effectiveness of the fire pumpset system.

Maintenance tasks may include routine inspections, lubrication of moving parts, testing of controls and alarms, and periodic performance testing to verify that the system meets specified flow and pressure requirements.

Australian Standards outline specific maintenance and testing procedures, as well as recommended frequencies for conducting these activities.
